Yoga's Role in Healthy Ageing
As elderly populations grow worldwide,healthy ageing is now urgent public health issue. Dr. Dada,professor at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS),stressed regular yoga's role in tackling both physical and mental health challenges. She told The Hindu before International Day of Yoga on June 21, 2026,that though life expectancy has risen with healthcare advances,many still battle lifestyle diseases in later years.
Hypertension,cardiovascular disorders,diabetes,Alzheimer’s — Dr. Dada noted these common among elderly. Yoga, she said, is more than exercise; it's holistic life approach fostering healthy habits,mental discipline. Research shows regular yoga can slow biological ageing,boost cellular health,improve life quality .
She urged everyone,especially seniors,to make yoga part of daily routine. Yoga postures improve flexibility,balance,neuromuscular coordination; meditation reduces stress,combats oxidative damage. And yoga helps manage Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS),balancing hormones,regulating menstruation,enhancing reproductive health.
