Coaching centers in Kota, India, have gained international recognition, with students now securing admissions at prestigious institutions like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Over the past nine years, 18 students from Kota have successfully enrolled at MIT, showcasing city’s growing influence in global education.
The city is renowned for its coaching institutes that prepare students for engineering and medical entrance exams. Each year, thousands flock to Kota from across India, drawn by its impressive selection ratios compared to other cities. However, the narrative is shifting; Kota's students are now aiming for top-tier global universities, not just Indian institutes like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
According to Vinod Kumawat, president of a private coaching institute, elite global institutions actively seek brilliant students from India. He noted that in addition to the 18 students admitted to MIT, 284 others have gained acceptance into top 50 universities worldwide. In total, over 2,600 students from Kota have received admission offers from various prestigious institutions, often accompanied by substantial scholarships .
Gaining entry into these elite universities is highly competitive. For instance, institutions like MIT,Stanford, and Harvard receive more than 50,000 applications annually but accept fewer than 2,000. Many talented students fail to secure admission, not due to lack of ability but because they struggle to effectively present their skills and overall development.
Among the current cohort, Kanishk Jain is set to attend MIT in 2026. Interestingly,he did not take the JEE Advanced exam, as he qualified through the International Olympiad. His admission was bolstered by a strong profile and impressive Olympiad results, which also earned him a generous scholarship . Similarly, Ved Lahoti, who topped the JEE Advanced in 2024,is now studying at MIT alongside fellow high achiever Devesh Bhaiya.
While many students in Kota focus on JEE and NEET preparation, a significant number are targeting international competitions. These students participate in various Olympiads in subjects like science, mathematics, and astronomy, which can lead to direct admissions into foreign universities without the need for JEE or NEET exams. The rigorous selection process for these Olympiads includes multiple stages, culminating in international-level competitions where students' capabilities are assessed .
Success in these competitions can lead to substantial scholarships, often covering 50% to 80% of tuition costs, making studying abroad more accessible for these students . Kumawat emphasized that students are not merely looking for jobs; they aspire to engage in research or become entrepreneurs, seeking opportunities to learn alongside other brilliant minds.
Global universities are keen to attract top talent,as having exceptional students enhances their reputation and long-term benefits. When these students later secure positions in multinational companies or innovate new technologies, it bolsters the university's standing and global ranking.
As landscape of education evolves, Kota's students are not just participants in national exams but are increasingly recognized on the world stage. Their achievements reflect a broader trend of Indian talent making significant strides in global academic arena.
