The southwest monsoon is set to arrive in Telangana around June 8 or 9, nearly two weeks later than last year, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD). This delay follows an unusually early onset in 2025, when the monsoon reached Kerala on May 24 and entered Telangana by May 26. The IMD's Hyderabad Centre attributes current timing to shifts in wind patterns that influence monsoon's movement across the region.
Initially, the monsoon is expected to impact southern Telangana, particularly areas that were once part of the Mahbubnagar district, such as Narayanpet and Nagarkurnool. These districts are likely to receive the first rains associated with the monsoon's arrival. Following this, system is projected to advance northward, reaching Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana within two days . The exact speed of this progression will depend on prevailing atmospheric conditions,as explained by IMD scientist Mr. Dharma Raju.
The movement of the monsoon is closely linked to the strength of low-level southwesterly winds over Indian peninsula. Strong winds facilitate the rapid advance of moisture-laden clouds, leading to widespread rainfall. Conversely, weaker winds can hinder monsoon's progress, resulting in delays . Raju noted that a robust southwesterly component typically enhances the monsoon's pace, while fluctuations in these wind patterns can significantly alter its timing .
As monsoon approaches, farmers and residents alike are keenly awaiting the rains, which are vital for agriculture and water supply . The IMD's forecasts will be closely monitored as the season unfolds, especially given the unusual delay compared to the previous year.
