Madhya Pradesh plans to roll out a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced in a video message. He urged residents to voice their opinions. Yadav argued that the mix of customs and laws regarding marriage and family across religions is outdated.
The Chief Minister pointed out that three other states have already adopted a UCC. Uttarakhand took the lead in 2024,followed by Gujarat in March 2026,and Assam, which passed its bill on May 27, 2026 . Chhattisgarh is also working on its own UCC legislation.
A committee formed in April, led by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prasad Desai, is traveling across Madhya Pradesh to gather public input. Yadav noted the committee includes experts from various fields and aims to engage with different religious communities. “We want the UCC in Madhya Pradesh soon,” he said.
Yadav's push for public feedback is part of a broader effort for legal reform in the state . He believes adopting a UCC is vital for promoting harmony among all groups. The Chief Minister mentioned that state government is working under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s guidance to speed up the process.
The six-member committee is tasked with drafting the UCC Bill and will present detailed report of its findings in 60 days. This group includes a retired Indian Administrative Service officer, a senior government official, and legal and social experts. Reports indicate the government hopes to introduce the UCC Bill in the State Assembly before Deepavali this year.
As state gears up for this legal shift, Yadav has made a direct appeal for public involvement. “I encourage you to share your suggestions and thoughts through the website,” he said. Implementing a UCC in Madhya Pradesh could bring a major change to the state's legal landscape, aligning it with trends seen in other states.
