The Indian National Congress has sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his silence regarding Israel's military actions in Lebanon, suggesting that he has compromised India's interests by undermining the ongoing U.S.-Iran negotiations aimed at halting the conflict in West Asia. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh questioned whether Modi's allegiance to a "so-called fatherland" overshadowed his commitment to India, referred to as his "actual motherland."
Ramesh emphasized the significance of the negotiations, which,if successful, could lead to the reopening of Strait of Hormuz and a subsequent decrease in oil prices—issues of paramount importance to India . He expressed concern that the talks have stalled largely due to Israel's aggressive military operations in Lebanon, which he described as unprecedented incursions.
In a pointed remark,Ramesh noted that while many global leaders have condemned Israel's actions, Modi has remained notably quiet. "The one head of government who has kept completely silent while Israel goes ahead with devastating Lebanon and sabotaging U.S.-Iran agreement is Prime Minister Narendra Modi," he stated.
Recent developments have seen U.S. President Donald Trump expressing frustration with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Reports indicate that Trump intervened to persuade Netanyahu to call off a planned strike on Beirut, following a tense conversation between two leaders. Trump announced on social media that he had successfully convinced Netanyahu to withdraw Israeli troops, stating, "He turned his troops around. Thank you Bibi."
This intervention came after Iran threatened to withdraw from negotiations due to Israel's continued military actions. Netanyahu had previously warned that Israel would target "terror targets" in Beirut if Hezbollah did not cease its attacks . Following Trump's call, representatives from Hezbollah reportedly agreed to halt their fire against Israel.
Ramesh's comments reflect a broader concern within the Congress party regarding Modi's foreign policy approach, particularly in relation to Israel and its impact on India's geopolitical interests. The Congress leader's remarks come at a time when tensions in the region remain high, and outcome of the U.S.-Iran negotiations could have significant implications for India's energy security and diplomatic standing.
