Bengaluru stands out now as key football talent hub in India,producing players who've left mark . One standout is Narayanaswami Ulaganathan from Gowthampura,known as "Little Brazil." Ulaganathan made history with first Durand Cup hat-trick for Mohun Bagan. His passion started young,inspired by local legends playing in Gowthampura after Kolkata stints.
Ulaganathan kicked off his career at Bangalore Mars Football Club,then joined CIL in 1978-79,playing alongside Krishnaji Rao,Amjad Khan. His international break came in 1972,representing India in Olympic qualifiers in Burma. By 1973,he was in Merdeka tournament in Malaysia,then signed with Mohun Bagan in 1974,staying three years before moving to East Bengal for another three. Also played for Mohammedan Sporting FC,represented India at 1974 Asian Games in Iran,Kings Cup in South Korea. Retired in 1985,received 'Banga Ratna','Banglar Gaurav' from West Bengal government. Now serves as brand ambassador for Karnataka Football Association.
From Austin Town,C. Ravi Kumar has over 25 international caps for India. Started at Bangalore Mars Club,then played for CIL,BEL,ITI. Between 1983-1987,represented national team five times,competed in Santosh Trophy ten times. After Mohun Bagan,returned to Bengaluru,reflected on game's evolution,noting modern players must follow coaches' orders strictly,unlike earlier times when individual talent ruled.
R. Mohan,former vice-president of Bangalore District Football Association,also hails from Austin Town. Started football journey in 1969 at Regional Coaching Camp in Bengaluru,joined Railways team in 1973. Represented Karnataka's junior national team in 1975,semifinals against Bengal. Moved to Kolkata,played for Mohammedan Sporting Club in 1977 . Influenced by Syed Naeemuddin,former Indian team captain,Mohan returned to Bengaluru,played for local clubs,including HAL Football Club for 15 years.
Another name,Noel Anthony William,represented India from 1998 to 2002,graduated from Tata Football Academy. William recalled few age-group tournaments,players joined open competitions like Durand Cup. Emphasized modern facilities' importance,nutrition,health coaching to boost performance. Concerned players choose club contracts over national team due to financial reasons,arguing national team should pay more .
