Tamil Nadu government announced a big shift in hiring fireman drivers to tackle shortage in Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services (TNFRS). Before,these jobs were filled only by promoting from within. Now, direct recruitment's on the table.
Under new rules,TNFRS will recruit fireman drivers through Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board. Gov order states a 4:1 ratio — four hired directly for each one promoted from Category 3 of Class II personnel.
About 8,100 personnel work from 384 stations across state . TNFRS depends on skilled drivers to operate nearly 980 fire, rescue vehicles . Their expertise critical in emergencies, as drivers run pumps,maintain pressure for firefighting.
Before,firemen needed three years' service before promotion to driver. Gov's decision could ease staff shortages that have slowed operations . In 2025 alone, department answered 23,043 fire calls, saving 93 lives, protecting property worth ₹691 crore. Also handled 154,634 rescue calls,saving 3,214 lives, over 95,359 animals.
