The revised State Budget for Kerala has left residents of Kochi and the broader Ernakulam district feeling disappointed, with scant new initiatives and limited financial commitments. While the government outlined plans for development, the absence of substantial budget allocations has raised concerns among local stakeholders.
Among the few highlights, the government has earmarked ₹10 crore for the transformation of the Kochi–Thrissur belt into a jewellery manufacturing corridor. This initiative aims to establish a dedicated gold exchange hub and a jewellery manufacturing park, alongside training programs for designers and manufacturers. However, the overall financial support remains modest.
Plans for Kochi Port and Vizhinjam include the establishment of manufacturing zones, stuffing centers, and dry ports. Despite promises to reserve percentage of employment opportunities for coastal communities, no budgetary provisions have been made for land acquisition or infrastructure development.
Other allocations include ₹10 crore for the modernization of Ernakulam Medical College and ₹1 crore for a memorial honoring the late actor Salim Kumar . The construction of the Goshree–Bolgatty Parallel Bridge and the Goshree–Mamangalam Road have also been allocated ₹1 crore, but these figures fall short of expectations .
The Budget mentions plans for Information and Communication Technology facilities for the High Court and district judiciary, alongside a proposed arbitration court for Kochi. Yet,specific funding for these projects is lacking. A world-class global convention center adjacent to Kochi airport has been proposed, which could enhance the airport’s role in the state’s aviation sector. However, details regarding funding for related initiatives, such as the Maintenance,Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) sector and pilot training facilities, are also absent.
In tourism, Fort Kochi has been selected for the pilot phase of the Green Marshals scheme, aimed at promoting environmental awareness through training women as marshals. The Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority received only a brief mention, with vague promises to enhance its efficiency.
