Karnataka Lokayukta now holding several officials accountable for inaction on displaced people's rehabilitation in Belagavi district. This follows an assessment by Lokayukta's team. Infrastructural failures,humanitarian neglect laid bare after heavy rains.
Bailahongal town saw rainfall far above normal,reportedly over 97 mm . Water's sudden influx devastated local homes,especially in Havaldara Galli, Channamma Samadhi Road,Kalmath Galli. Despite destruction, no casualties recorded. Residents' anger loud and clear .
On June 8, local Ishwar Shilledar, fed up, clung to electric pole surrounded by floodwaters. His frustration with authorities' disaster response was palpable. Media reports showed chaos — motorcycles,belongings swept away by surging waters.
Further south, Savadatti saw 15-20 homes flooded . Residents lost essentials like food, clothing. Areas hit included Bennikatti,Savalabavi Oni, Ramapur Site. Even Yellamma temple wasn't spared water damage.
Lokayukta's report said proactive official action could've curbed much destruction. Officials now summoned to face Upa Lokayukta on July 27 over claims. Among those called: Sub-Divisional Officer, Tehsildar, Taluk Panchayat Executive Officer,several municipal commissioners.
Lokayukta's directive sent to Belagavi Deputy Commissioner, other key officials. Stressed need for effective disaster management, accountability. But will this change anything…?
