Saeed Khatibzadeh,Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister,again signaled Tehran's interest in talks with U.S. But he made it clear — America's obligations must be met,and Israel needs to follow the new memorandum of understanding (MoU). Speaking to Al Jazeera Arabic Friday, Khatibzadeh noted progress depends on the other side's commitment.
This comes after expected U.S.-Iran discussions in Switzerland fell through,supposed to happen same day. U.S. Vice President JD Vance also canceled his visit. Earlier,intermediaries from Pakistan and Qatar were hopeful about Burgenstock talks,highlighting the MoU signed earlier in week.
Negotiation breakdown coincides with violence spike in southern Lebanon. Reports say Israeli airstrikes killed at least 47, calling them “continued war-making,” warning of “serious and immediate consequences.”
Iran's deputy minister stressed Islamic Republic's push for “peace on all fronts, including Gaza,” linking Lebanon's turmoil to broader regional conflict. MoU stresses stop to hostilities in Lebanon as key to any ceasefire success.
“There will be no peace or stability in Lebanon and the region without ending the occupation and Israel’s commitment to international law,” Khatibzadeh asserted.
In related news, Khatibzadeh addressed the Strait of Hormuz situation,saying Iran will continue navigation services with Oman,respecting international law. No navigation fees for first 60 days of agreement, but new management approach will follow.
He also emphasized any future deals must include release of all frozen Iranian assets. Esmaeil Baghaei,Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson,said U.S. agreement discussions are moving if conditions met .
Regarding Lebanon ceasefire,a Hezbollah rep indicated truce will hold if Israel sticks to commitments. Meanwhile,Israel’s U.S. ambassador,Yechiel Leiter,reiterated call for immediate ceasefire,saying peace follows if Hezbollah respects deal and stops aggression .
