On a remarkable football day,Dutch royals saw both Netherlands and their former colony Curacao hit milestones in World Cup. King Willem-Alexander,Queen Maxima,and Princess Ariane were in Houston Saturday,watching Netherlands crush Sweden 5-1.
After match,the royals went about 800 miles to Kansas City to celebrate Curacao's historic first-ever World Cup point in a draw with Ecuador. Curacao team,mostly players born in Netherlands,offered unique connection for royals,who joined players in dressing room post-match.
“It is extra-special World Cup because we have both the Netherlands and Curacao,” Willem-Alexander told RTL-TV. “So we have twice as many teams to cheer for. It’s a great opportunity to cheer on both the Blues and the Oranges.”
The day meant a lot for the King,who hopes both teams progress far . Queen Maxima,from Argentina,will watch defending champions' match against Austria in Arlington,Texas,on Monday.
Curacao,a small island with around 158,000 people,remains part of Kingdom of Netherlands. Its history links back to 17th century Dutch colonial expansion in regions including Indonesia,South Africa,Caribbean . This colonial past includes transatlantic slave trade,during which thousands were trafficked to Dutch colonies. In 2023,King Willem-Alexander formally apologized for Netherlands' role,expressing deep personal connection to historical injustices.
