Body of Santosh Kumar, 20-year-old tourist from Bengaluru, was found Sunday after strong waves swept him away at Payyambalam beach in Kannur,Kerala, day before . Tragedy struck around 1:30 p.m. Saturday as Kumar swam about 200 meters from shore during high tide.
Kumar was with a four-member group visiting Kannur on trip to Kottiyoor. As he was pulled into sea,another member,Manoj, also got into trouble but lifeguards and coastal police rescued him. Manoj's now receiving treatment for injuries .
Search for Kumar was a coordinated effort led by Azhikkal coastal police and Fisheries department,with local fishers,lifeguards,and rescue personnel using boats along coastline. Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala joined in the extensive operation . Once recovered, Kumar's body was sent for post-mortem and expected to be transported back to Karnataka later Sunday.
Earlier same day,another incident at same beach saw Chiranth Sharma, 24-year-old from Mysuru,rescued after getting stranded in rough waters while swimming with friends near police aid post .
In response, Tourism Minister P.C. Vishnunadh visited beach to assess situation,announcing plans for better safety measures . More lifeguards, extra warning signs coming. District Collector P.
