A Criminal Investigation Department (CID) inspector and two accomplices were arrested in connection with a robbery involving ₹20 lakh in Bengaluru. The incident occurred on Thursday in Madiwala, where suspects allegedly targeted individuals from Keralam. The police have identified the inspector as Mahesh Kanakagiri,along with his accomplices Kupendra Reddy and Vasanth Kumar.
The robbery unfolded at a private hotel, where the trio entered the victims' room. Posing as local police officers, they assaulted victims before making off with the cash. Initial investigations suggest that Kanakagiri may have been waiting in a car outside, dressed in uniform. A police officer indicated that the inspector's precise role in the crime is still under scrutiny.
After victims reported the incident to Madiwala police,Mohammad Sujeetha, the Deputy Commissioner of Police for the Southeast Division,formed a special team to pursue the case . While the two accomplices were quickly apprehended, Kanakagiri initially evaded capture. However,by Friday night, police managed to locate and arrest him.
Authorities have charged the suspects under various sections pertaining to dacoity,intimidation, assault, and criminal conspiracy. The police recovered the stolen money and vehicle used in the crime,which was reportedly a government car. A senior officer revealed that Kanakagiri had previously served as the Station House Officer at a police station in the Southeast Division before being reassigned to the Police Commissioner’s Office due to prior allegations.
Preliminary findings indicate that Kanakagiri received a tip-off from a former informant about the victims carrying a significant sum of money. complainants stated they had brought the cash for trading purposes,having been informed of lucrative returns by a friend. Investigations are ongoing to determine the reasons behind their possession of such a large amount of cash.
